Blogs about my thoughts, rants and ramblings.

On Charice, Sam etc.

I have another, let’s say, theory on Sam. Sam was the winner in LBS. ABS-CBN might be doing what they can for Sam to promote him simply for the fact the he is the big winner, regardless of the protests/objections/violent reactions. (Many actually agree that Charice is the winner but who are we to stop the fangirls to vote who they want to vote?) I was actually puzzled about the “international status” of Sam’s career because of Kung-Fu Panda. I do agree though that it is an honor for him to be chosen to sing the theme for the movie. It was just maybe a little overhyped. At least Nikki Gil was really introduced in other Asian countries (Disney again, right?) by way of High School Musical soundtrack Asian edition. Billy is international though only in Europe.

Again, a theory on Charice. Maybe ABS-CBN didn’t know what to do with Charice. Charice when she was 9 years old could have beaten all those AI contestants. Big voice on a kid. And let’s face the fact that showbiz is business. They didn’t know how to market Charice. One factor could be her age. She performs songs that are for older ladies (like Whitney Houston), and nine-year-old girls are supposed to be cute. BUT Charice is diva material.

Another thing, I just noticed this recently, the Philippines is sorely lacking of music composers who are very much in tuned to the international market. The lyrics are fine. Just the music. It needs more. The ballads are good, but can’t they produce music other than ballads? It is my belief that there is no pop music in the Philippines (I know there are but can’t recall the who, what, and when). In the 80s, yes of course, but there is none or few now. And you know what? I am so proud we have lots of good singers in the Philippines. It is just sad that they weren’t able to showcase their talents internationally and develop their crafts to the fullest. They can do RnB but RnB music is almost nonexistent in this country. Yes, RnB are played in radio stations, sang in Videoke etc. But few are locally produced RnB music. ( yikes…. sorry off topic)

Back to topic…

Charice is bound to be the one of the greatest musical artists, if what is happening to her right now is an indicator. Let’s support her, Filipinos and non-Filipinos alike. It is my hope that other Filipino talents would have the opportunity that she has now. Like the saying goes, “the more, the merrier.” LOL!

Off topic again:

Congrats Pacman! To Diaz, you may have lost the belt, but you have gained many Filipinos’ respect. Mabuhay! Viva!

  1. All Networks in the country still lives in stone age or before the internet era, they still think their audience can’t do much any ado whatever they put in the TV screen or movie screen. They movie industry in our country is gone because of their inability to compete with foreign films. If you’ve seen one movie in the country that means you’ve seen them all even the films created back during the 40’s.
Charice and Arnel Pineda have been singing in the country for about 10-20 years now, they were right under their noses, they were like 2 big elephants in the room and they can’t see them!! Foreign countries saw just 1 video of Charice and Arnel Pineda (just one video guys)and the rest is history! ABS-CBN is like the Philippine Congress(they are 4 Estradas in our goverment, 1 mayor,2 senator and a former president: The Arroyos, 3 congressman and a President. This are just tip of the iceberg). ABS-CBN’s power broker are the old guards, you have to be a family member to become an actress or singer(why would they make an album for Gretchen Barreto, for Boy Abunda or for KC Concepcion). Charice did not come from a privilege family, they still trying to resist her, Charice was in ASAP station last June 15, 2008 and was given the usual treatment, nothing spectacular…but when KC Concepcion’s turn in the same show you would not believed the fireworks before and during her performance.
Another disengenious with the networks is their claimed that their artist are international when infact only Lea Salonga, Charice, Arnel Pineda are the one making it internationally. Yes they had concerts in the US but only to cater to Pilipino audience in an unknown venue and nothing international at all.

  2. Hey again! and You again :)

Agree, agree, agree to all what you said.

I didn’t actually see the ASAP episode that day. I watched it in youtube. Just the Champs segment and Charice. Didn’t watch KC, Bea, or Nancy Jones either. But I read the mixed reviews in PEX. A lot of people were disappointed at KC’s performance. Di daw bagay sa kanya yung kinanta nya.

Comment on your comments, isa lang naman… Hey konting positive naman dyan. Just by reading you comments, sumasama lalo ang loob ko. Request lang, sana promote natin and ibang Filipino artists, not just Charice, Arnel or Lea Salonga. Arnel and Charice, they’re already inside the door. Miss Lea, matagal na. Lots of Filipino artists are still outside. Confident ako sa future ni Charice. Arnel is doing fine. Journey is doing fine in Billboards Album chart. I’m waiting for another Filipino artist to join them. peace out!

btw. watch mo yung nag-guest na mga filipinos sa starking. It think they’re family, contortionist yung girl, tsaka may juggling.. basta.. they’re amazing.

  3. Well, I am very positive on the future of our local aritst specially the coming generations, like what Sarah G. often said Charice, Lea and Arnel gave hope to our struggling artist or future artist, we can be a lead vocalist or a diva not just in the country but around the world the ceiling is broken.
I saw them on youtube too, they’re really amazing but
let me ask you a question…that’s the first time i saw them or heard of them (in Korean TV) I guess that’s the first time you saw them too right? (in Korean TV too).
Think about this.. Sweden and the Journey saw just one video of Charice and Arnel on youtube (just one video guys)
    and the rest is history.
I always love reading your writings and pls. don’t think that i’m being difficult. I see things as a social issues rather than from a fan perspective but don’t get me wrong i am a big fan of Lea Salonga and i like Charice and Arnel’s life struggle or their life story, it’s like Cinderella.
Thank you very much and don’t stop reading !

  4. Thanks Blanco for regularly checking my blog. About the acrobatic performance in starking, I think I have watched them in the past here in the Philippines. Their act is similar to what you see in “Perya”… first time to watch it in Korean TV (stumbled upon while searching for Charice vids LOL)

haaay….Nakakalula ang dami ng mga Filipinos na may talent. Stumbled upon din si Lica de Guzman. Also a child singer but she is based in Switzerland. Her earlier performances are good (when she’s about 8 years old). She’s 11 now. Sad, her voice changed. Hopefully she develop it still. Apparently, she was discovered by Phil Collins and another guy.

    Have a nice day!

  6. ano ba yan liz…can you be more civilized and learn to see the facts instead of bashing charice…you used exactly the same words and comments…im sure you are already run out of negative things to say about Charice performance especially now that all raves were on her after that duet with Andrea Bocelli..

And I couldn’t agree more with the comments regarding the networks back in Philippines. It is also for that reason why Filipinos’ viewership never evolve. It is like “perya”, all is about singing and dancing or if not, pure drama. The Filipino psyche particularly the masses never gets any better from “blind loyalty” to idols. Which is why there is crab mentality, as they put it.

I remember way back then, Lea Salonga was not very popular in the Filpino masses, compared to her other contemporaries at “That’s Entertainment”. But when she was recognized by Schoenberg and Boublil, it was the start. Almost to a point where her role for “Miss Saigon” was like tailor made for her. Consequently, the whole world recognize her. Then it made every Filipino proud.

I think Charice has suffered the same fate. She was not popular at the time she joined the contest, and the network ABS-CBN whose revenue capitalizes on what the Filipino masses wants, made Sam Concepcion win.

Currently, all praises were given to Charice. Sadly, back home, a lot of people still pull her down. Her confidence is often misconstrued as “mayabang”. Let me correct our kababayan back in our country that “being confident” when you are performer is different from being “mayabang”. For a girl like Charice who came from public school versus Leah Salonga’s OB Montessori, confidence is what she would truly needs. In other words, dito sa America di uubra ang tinatawag nyong humble na panay “po” sa hosts, like Sarah Geronimo and Sam Concepcion. As a culture, using “po” addressing our elders is appropriate, but if you are entertainer, especially in America, confidence is what you need otherwise, being “pa-humble” will create an impression of “low self-esteem”.

It’s no wonder 95% of Charice followers were all Filipino abroad from Korea, Canada, USA, Italy etc. because we understand and support her.

  7. Woah! Hot topic pa rin sina Charice and Sam.

We all have different preferences. Different people, different tastes.

I get that people like Sam or Charice but I don’t appreciate people who attacks them because they are hurt for their idols.

Sometimes fans should or at least try to see the side of the other fans. I can understand why people doesn’t like Sam. If they hate him, I don’t know why because “hate” is a strong word. Same thing with the “mayabang” thing with Charice. I can understand them because people have different interpretations of a certain action.

I am going to be frank and honest… I did not like the fact that Charice made a face (simangot, ismid, etc.) when they were being interviewed (the ASAP number) but I do understand her being upset. I like the fact that she always say she is from the Philippines, always. It just shows how she wants to make the Philippines proud. I did not like it when in an interview she said she hopes “na sana suportahan naman sya ngayon ng mga Plipino gaya ng pagsuporta ng mga taga-ibang bansa sa kanya” — to that effect (not verbatim). She said it in a way that a lot of people got offended including those that would like to support her, they got disappointed.

For Sam, I can’t say much about him because I don’t watch him. Last I watched him was when he was singing with Charice, two MVs in youtube, and when he was still in Little Big Star.

For me, there’s nothing wrong with the “po and opo” of Sam and Sarah as you’ve said cltfrombccanada. As long as they can perform, then that’s fine with me.

I also like the fact that Charice has confidence, ex. the Star King guesting, exudes confidence and showmanship.. super galing…oops kulang, exudes confidence and showmanship and with a HUGE talent. san ka pa!

About liz’s comment, obviously she was really upset. What I THINK is someone (a Charice fan) made a pot shot on Billy and she was venting her anger here. It would be nice if she can expound on why she said those things about Charice.

Blind loyalty to idols also applies to Charice fans…. you can disagree with me but I always read, ALWAYS, SOME Charice fans venting their anger on ABS-CBN, Sarah Geronimo, Rachel Ann Go, etc. This is not exclusive to Charice fans. There are Sarah, Rachelle, Kyla and Regine fans like this, too. I just want to say…. MOVE ON PEOPLE! Support her/him, whoever your favorite artist is. You are not going to help them if you keep ranting on and on about the unfairness of things blah blah blah.

To all these artists’ fans, did it occur to you that some of them (other artist’s fans) might also like and want to support your idol? And you keep bashing their favorite artists? Or you’re bashing the other artists when you are upset with the fans? UNBELIEVABLE!

    aarghhhhhhhhhh! …. inhale.. exhale….

    Okay. Enough for that.

    next!

I will soon post some videos of Charice. I just saw some old vids in her LBS days, new uploads. hehehe. Maybe someone read my blog in which I was asking if anyone has or seen them. thanks!

  8. I love watching Charice sing, she is so talented. I just hope and pray if David Foster says that Charice is that good and talented wish he would write and produce a song for her. Cause her talent will go to waste if she stays in the Phil. cause if she keeps on performing for the “BAYKA CROWD” nothing will happen to her career. Her voice is priceless and i hope somebody could compose a good powereful song for where she can really reach her dream.

HERE’S THE ARTICLE FROM PHIL. STAR ABOUT CHARICE’S LIFE STORY IN OPRAH SHOWS

Oprah Winfrey has sent her crew to the Phils. to follow charice in her day-to-day life. headed by Janeth(Oprah’s senior producer) Marc Jonhston(reprensentative for Andrea Bocelli and David Foster)immigration lawyer and star columnist Michael Gurfinkel, and Mickey Munoz
Jonhston is in Manila to look into the possibility of charice doing a concert with Foster. Oprah crew arrived Wednesday last week and went to Charice’s hometown in Laguna and Batangas.

  11. Liz,..
…..1. mayabang siya, as if naman pagaaksayahan ng busy na c oprah na panoorin lahat ng performance niya!
—>wierd, coz as far as i know, it was oprah who called and asked david foster to include charice to the list of performers because she loved her. (even pulled off from the plane for this.)

…..2. OA siya, lahat nagkakamali, pero para umiyak ka apa at magdemand ng solo performance, it’s too much,
—>if it was her fault she messed up,OA nga. But it was not her fault if she was not informed the earliest time possible. And as far as i know, she did not demand for a solo performance. It was given for her to regain her composure. After all, not only filipinos watch her, but other countries as well.

…..3.you call the others low grade singer, don’t you know how good billy crawford is at performing? Charice is a low grade performer! Singer siya, un lang un
—>i do think billy crawford is pretty good. but i don’t think you call a teenager who can sing, dance, draw, play guitar, communicate with confidence, and entertain her audience, a low grade performer. if she was, what else would you call performers who can’t go out of their comfort zone, who’s given record deals though not really that gifted.

…..4.magbawas ng yabang ok? nakakhiya sa mga tiga-ibang bansa…
—> I think that was what other countries loved about her. She emits the right amount of confidence despite her humble beginnings..
—>wla nman sa lugar comment mo.. next time, do some research first..

    Maryjo8,..
—>i do support her, since her LBS days, and i do understand her statement. frankly, and sadly, she never really receives the same support from her home town, unlike in other countries. Because filipinos don’t find her talent good enough and will do anything to pull her down.. because of ‘inggit’

    cltfrombccanada,.. and blanco,..
totally agree with you both.. esp on the confidence thing.. and the privilege thing.. :)

i just believe charice’s talent is one of a kind. not just because she’s a pretty good singer at her very young age. It’s because of that something in this talent that touches the heart of its listeners (with or without an ear for music).

    Comment by Claire019 | September 16, 2008 | Reply

  12. claire019, i know people still support her. everybody agrees that charice has THE talent. some are just denying it because they did not like a certain something in her. definitely, there is something wrong in the music industry (in the philippines) if talent’s like charice is not being recognized. i do think that it is being recognized but for some reason, she’s not that visible in local TV (or i’m just not watching local TV more). people have different preferences and we all have the freedom to choose who to support. more projects for charice? maybe it’s not in the philippines and maybe it’s in the states. look at the singers in the philippines, they’re doing revivals (excluding the bands because they really have their own songs) and i hate it! kyla is really good but again, revivals! same with sheryn regis. thank god kitchie nadal (who is more of a rakista – alt. rock), barbie almalbis (again, pop/rock alt), and sarah geronimo (this might be a surprise to non-sarah fans but her recent albums have original songs with one or two revival songs) are there. that’s why i’m more into filipino bands. fans should just support her and maybe she’ll have what she really wants and deserves in her career.

  13. agree…
just hate it when others try to pull others down. why can’t they be just happy with what others have achieved. after all, not all people can have the same accomplishments, even for their detractors.
im just proud for the fact that a fellow filipina is making herself known around the globe..
and for the record.. i’v bin watching her videos on youtube even before she was known globally.

but what i’m more amazed is when i went through a video of a one year old girl singing the pinoy big brother theme song.. haha! loved it..

  17. heto kc un.

I myself know how Charice started to get fame via youtube, ksama ko c Falsevoice sa pag defend kay Charice. In the middle of 2007, there is a wide competition between Filipinos vs American singers like Regine vs Mariah, at that time merong videos na may 11 million viewers came from Bianca Ryan that shows how Brandy astonished that her face seems shock for the performance. However we Filipinos in youtube also shock how the audience and the judges react, for us, the performance of Bianca couldn’t even won in our local barangay singing competition, not so good in our ears.

Falsevoice made the video in comparison and Filipinos in youtube and he sought Charice because Charice had the nearest age of 11 for Bianca to compare. Filipinos in youtube help spread the news, Falsevoice also uploaded also the “I will always love you” performance that made Charice more popular. Later Charice get noticed by Star King in Korea. Notice that Charice sung “And I’m Telling You” that was peformed b4 by Bianca Ryan in AGT.

Charice get invited by Ellen, Paul de Grady, David FOSTER and Oprah.

    MY VIEWS…..

Charice is great and we should be proud of her, but she was not the greatest.

I’m happy for Charice, but I don’t admire her attitude. I’ve seen all of her interviews and performance, and I hate to accept it, maybang tlga xa.

Filipinos should support her, but we should not compare her to the artists that had already had been proven their talent, with humbleness to all of their success.

Hindi porket international star ka eh ikaw na pinaka magaling, it only happened that American has a major influence around the glove specially when it comes to music. Look at Britney Spears & Paris Hilton, Britney never sounds good in her live performances and mostly made all peformance lipsync. Also Mariah Carey, a superstar but lipsyncs most of the time.

Let’s support Charice, let’s support Filipino talents.

  18. to claire,

there’s nothing wrong in reviving music so please donot underestimate our local artists, we lacked of composers and instruments because of piracy and poverty in the Philippines.

Blame the corruption in the government that lead the majority of us in poverty. Revivals of music of most of our artists symbolized our weak music industry but these things happened because of lack of support for our very own music. Please do research and studies before you judged.

  19. Hi

Let me give you an independent’s opinion fellow bloggers.

I never heard of Sarah, Rachel, Sam etc until I heard of Charice. I heard Charice when I accidentally browsed Celine and Whitney Houston’s video clip in YTube, which leads me to Charice described as the ‘young Whitney or the young Celine’. I am no fan of Charice but I love Charice’s voice. This little girl has a big voice at such a young age, not to mention that Charice can hit the notes better than the original singer. I am not a fan but I bought her CD & Hitman CD imported from the Philippines to deliver it to me here in USA.

So I browsed more of Charice videos, especially the raw videos with bad quality recording. If you listen to these videos, Charice made it a good recording despite the fact that it was recorded badly. The next thing I browsed more videos which bloggers were comparing Charice to that of Sarah or Sam et al.

Here’s my opinion to you all,

    - Charice has a pure and soultry voice that we have not heard for a long (since Whitney’s time or Barbara Streisand)
    - A lot of artist before the launch of their own album have sung cover songs, how do you think those american idols got their contract? None of them started having their own album
    - Philippine singers are good but NOT great except Charice who have gone a further step in success
    - Charice performs in events which per ticket cost around $10000 as the cheapest
    - None of Philippine singers have achieved that by far at that age
    - Philippine singers who goes to another country to do a concert are not “international singers”, these singers perform to Filipino compatriots who lives in that country where they perform. So please do NOT call some of Philippine singers as “international singers”. We have to be real here.
    - Amongst the singers who performed internationally, there were only few: Pilita Corales, Lea Salonga, Monique Wilson, Arnel Pineda and lastly and hopefully not the last is CHARICE
    - Do not compare Sarah and Charice, Sarah may be famous in the Philippines but she is unheard of with Filipinos who live outside the Philippines, Sarah can sing, Sarah has a voice BUT NOT as good as Charice and not as great as Charice’s voice
    - Sam could NOT sing and I do not understand how this little guy won a singing contest, he should have been eliminated from the beginning
    - How did the voters voted for Sam instead of Charice, I wonder. Are the Filipinos really that dummy? (Hope not). When the Americans voted for Bush the second time, the Europeans wondered how could be 50,000,000 Americans be so dumbed? Its the saying goes.
    - Other Philippine singers that could compete as ‘world class’ are Regine and Dulce but NOT Sarah or other singers
    - As David Foster said ‘Charice does NOT belong to Disney musicals’. Charice belongs to ‘diva like’ singing and hopefully belong in the likes of Celine, Mariah and Whitney
    - As David Foster said ‘A Diva is born tonight’
    - Charice singing career in the US have yet to be proven, we do not know the outcome until she would release her album
    - I feel positive of her album though, America love to hear songs which is a pure talent, Charice have proven this already, otherwise she would not be singing in any David Foster’s show
    - Let’s not be pretentious, we may be a fan of who and who, but let’s not deny the fact, that Charice as young as she can be, she is the most talented girl in the whole world
    - Could you really bring anyone who can sing like Charice? Charice voice can only be heard once in a few generation
    - You may have wonder why in the Philippines with so many potential singers, they remain UNdiscovered – what happened to Charice in the Philippines is a testament that Filipinos are incompetent in looking and launching great talents!

  22. I would like to comment on ashley’s statement regarding Sarah G. not known by Filipinos outside the Philippines. Have you heard of TFC? In fact, Sarah is in demand when it comes to concerts abroad. Almost every year she’s performing in at least 14 cities in the US. Puwera pa yung Canada at some European countries ha. Hindi naman siguro tanga ang mga Filipino producers abroad para gastusan ang TF ni Sarah G., kung hindi sila kumikita ng limpak-limpak. AndI disagree na she don’t have a great voice.
I really don’t like some of her fa’s attitude.
