G-Force Vids Galore

If  you are an avid viewer of ASAP 09, then you would know them.  They are the resident dancers of the noontime Sunday variety show.  The main choreographer is Ms. Georcelle Dapat who is quite a celebrity now as G-Force is now considered as one of the best dance groups in the Philippines. G-Force has its own segment in the show which is called “Dance Cool” where, basically, they teach some steps.  Also some celebrities join the dancers as students.  The voice over “teacher” is also Ms. Georcelle.

Brillante Mendoza’s “Serbis”

I was surprised while browsing Yahoo! Movies today. I saw a familiar title of a movie called Serbis which have gotten me curious enough to view the trailer. Yup, it was the same movie shown in some film festivals outside the Philippines. There were articles about it before, saying Sean Penn or some actor liking it and would try to help Mr. Mendoza, the director, distribute the film in the U.S. All gay films are always controversial in the Philippines and this particular film is not an exception. It did not have a nationwide showing and was considered an art film. As expectedly, few people know of this film. If not for some news about its run in international film festivals, fewer would have known of this. This is a small film and it’s really nice that someone took a chance on it. Admittedly, it’s not my type of film. I can’t say I would have watched it before if I had known it then. I just wish those brilliant indie film directors would make movies that do not have to be about gays or sex. I’m not saying they shouldn’t ever put gays or sex on it but make it more subtle without compromising what they want to impart to the moviegoer. Not many people want to watch this kind of movie as it is.

Here is the link to the trailer:

Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Series

twilight_book_cover-

I did not know that there is a novel  called Twilight until the movie came out.  I’ve read some of Anne Rice’s works so  I’m not really new to this genre of book.  Interview With A Vampire is still my  favorite Anne Rice novel. I like Buffy:  The Vampire Slayer and its spin-off,  Angel, and Blade trilogy. Being somewhat  a fan of vampire books, series and  movies, naturally I was curious about  this “Twilight” series. Some of the  comments on YT and blogs were fairly  positive with “Oohhhh, I so love this  book!” and “OMG, I can’t wait for the  movie to come out. Twilight is my  favorite.” That sort of thing. So what  did I do? I read the d@#$ book. I know!  Sucker! LOL!

-

The first book in the series is called  Twilight, of course. The first three  paragraphs gave me an idea what to expect  from the book. And Oh boy! I thought the  book would be a disappointment. Maybe I  was so used to reading seasoned authors- -meaning those included in the bestseller  lists like John Grisham, David Baldacci,  Stephen King, Anne Rice, etc.–that I  thought the book did not deserve to be  publish like that. English literature is  not my major and my grammar is not really  excellent. I get typos and wrong grammar  every now and then. However, this book  got my eyebrow hiked up. The grammar  mistakes were very noticeable. The ellipses were overused. Every other paragraph and  sometimes succeeding paragraphs have  them. It was really irritating. Some  words were overused, too. I don’t know  how many “gloriously,” “perfect,”  “beautiful,” and “utterly” were there but  it was enough to be considered too much.  Why couldn’t the author use dictionary or  thesaurus? There are so many adjectives  to describe a thing or a person. Isn’t  there supposed to be an editor for books  before they get published? Oh well…

-

The main protagonists are Bella, a teen- age human, and Edward, a century-old  vampire. Bella is a klutz as she  repeatedly mentioned in the book. She  just got transferred to a school in a  small town called Forks where her dad  lives. Her mother got remarried and she,  Bella, decided to be a self-sacrificing  daughter and moved in with her father.  She met Edward, a “gloriously” beautiful  junior in her new high school. She had no  suspicion that this Edward and his  “perfect” siblings were vampires. How  could she when the rest of the town who  knew the Cullens (that’s Edward’s family)  before she did have none. The girl had no  super power. In fact, she’s a klutz. That  was probably her super power because that  endeared her to the Cullens. LOL! Bella’s  character was not fully developed. Other  than the fact that, again thanks to her  mentioning a thousand times, she is just  a clumsy human and her head is full of  Edward, Edward, Edward and more Edward,  she has no redeemable qualities that  would make a heroine for our story. Does  the fact that Edward had the hots for her  count? I wouldn’t think so. Edward on the  other hand was established early on as  perfect, beautiful and shimmering. The  vampires were described as what was  mentioned above, but that was it. Those  adjectives were empty. How are they  perfect? How are they beautiful? The idea  of vampires shimmering or glowing under  the sunlight intrigues me though.

-

Reading the book was tedious for me. I  skipped a lot of pages but managed to  finish the book. Half of the book was  spent on Bella and Edward’s tiring  arguments albeit the topic had no  variations. It’s all about how Edward is  so worried about Bella’s safety and vice  versa, how Bella is not so special  according to her, how Bella is so  stubborn (how Bella is so stupid more  likely LOL!). Edward’s character was  confusing, too. One minute he was angry,  another minute he was flirting with  Bella. I didn’t know vampires could have  split personality or be bipolar. LOL! I  know, I know. He was struggling with his  emotions and his craving for Bella’s  blood, but it was not clearly indicated  as such. That’s the problem with first  person narration of the story. To make  matters worse, Bella was narrating. I  guess that’s about right. Bella was a  self-centered teenager. She wouldn’t know  and wouldn’t want to know what other  people think. It still doesn’t change the  fact that the other characters were  poorly established. I like Alice. Rosalie  was given little space in the book  though. It would have been better if the  author developed Rosalie’s character and  did not just mention her name whenever  Bella feels insecure.

-

Honestly, I thought the book was written  by a 12-year-old girl so I wiki-ed the  author. LOL! I’ve read better fan fiction  than this book. There are a lot of teens  who could write better. So sad. The book  had a lot of potential that the author  failed to achieve. For those who are not  book readers or 12-year-old girls, this  might be enjoyable to read. This was  categorized as YA book but they should  have put more effort on this. It was a  page turner for me (at first) because of  anticipation for a climax or a conflict  to make the book more interesting.  Unfortunately, I found it lacking. I was  so glad I just borrowed the books. It  would have been a waste of my money. Oh  yeah, I forgot to mention that I have the  four books. I’m through with the first  and second but I got frustrated with the  third so I left it unfinished. The second  book was much better in terms of grammar.  Sadly, the story was still dragging. It  was not my plan to watch the movie but  from the movie trailer I’ve watched on  TV, it must be better than the book.  Based on those previews, I think they  changed the story. I hope it’s still  showing in theaters.
-
-
*update:

I am continuing to read the third book  called Eclipse. The story is still  dragging (especially in the first half of  the book) but much better than the first  book; a big improvement if I may say so.  Whether I will like the book generally  remains to be seen. Jasper’s story is  interesting. I hope I don’t get  disappointed again.

Sarah Geronimo – Just Me album

I haven’t bought any copy yet of Sarah Geronimo’s newest album entitled, JUST ME.  I keep forgetting. LOL!  I’ve come across some reviews.  Because I still don’t have the album, I can’t review it.  I’ll just post some reviews from other sites.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

I’m quite confused on how to call her, whether she has developed to a Pop Queen or is a Pop Teen Princess yet, since she looks quite cute and very young on the cover of her latest album. A lot younger than she does on her Taking Flight and Becoming looks.

If you don’t know whom I’m talking about, I’m here about to discuss Sarah Geronimo, one of the most awesome singers and actress Abs-Cbn is holding. A treasure that the whole Philippines is proud of due to her local and international success in the past few years.Sarah Geronimo Just Me Album

I need to admit the fact that I’ve been very much disappointed about her Taking Flight Album, her cuteness was totally transparent on that said album (except for the single IKAW which was a quite awesome hit on Myx). Besides IKAW and TIME TO LET Go, there wasn’t much to talk about that album from my point of view. Unlike the prior Becoming, which was a definite powerhouse with one of her all time bests, Carry My Love.

But now, let’s leave the odds and endeavors of her prior history in terms of music behind. Sarah Geronimo’s Music Career now runs towards its fifth year and her fifth Album, Just Me. The album was released just this September 12, 2008 and is running H-O-T nationwide; I mean it. It’s on fire! And I’m proud to say, a lot of factors lead to its unflagging success at the present.

One of the hottest topics in town on a lot of websites is the single I’ll Be There which is track number one of the album, featuring Back Street Boys member Howie Dorough) and indeed, the promising criticism is worth it, and the song proves itself to be deserving the positive feedback it got from the crowd. The Popsters (that’s how Sarah Geronimo fans call themselves) are now awaiting the premiere of this carrier single of her album on Myx to start voting it straight through to the top of the charts. Could this be another pretty upset just like IKAW has marked its signature in Philippine Music History last year?

I used to be one of the avid addict posting Popsters on her Forums (the reason why I tried building my own and then ended up blogging), and I have to be honest, I didn’t knew about this album until a couple of hours ago when I glanced over the music store and noticed a familiar face, Sarah Geronimo covered in a new blue style, and I just went “Oh, it’s a new album that I really must have right now!” And here I am now, in possession of one of the many copies that have been sold already.

The song that caught most of my attention was the tagalog song entitled “Dahil Minahal Mo Ako” which is the 3rd track on the album. I’ll be keeping you on track with lyrics and with more information about the album and the songs inside it, and of course of the singers whenever there are new buzzers heating up.

That’ll be all for now, and hey guys, this album is a definite must have for all OPM Lovers and for all Sarah Geronimo supporters, go, grab a copy now!

PSEP ALBUM REVIEW: Sarah Geronimo’s “Just Me”

by: Rhia D. Grana

Sarah Geronimo’s “Just Me”

If only to judge from her singing and the cuts in her fifth album titled “Just Me,” Sarah, who turned 20 this year, is ready to fall in love. She renders all 16 tracks in her album with just the right emotion in her sweet, melodious voice.

Without a doubt, Sarah’s vocally gifted, and in this album, it’s good to hear that she displays this without trying too hard. Anyway, she doesn’t need to prove anything. She’s already way up there.

“Just Me” tackles love in various levels and intensities. And this time, Sarah sings her age. She has grown mature–as an artist and as a person, unlike a few years back when she was barely in her teens, belting out Celine Dion’s “To Love You More.”

Like her previous hits, the tracks in Sarah’s hew album have easy recall; you can memorize the tune and/or the lyrics with three to four playbacks.

“I’ll Be There for You,” Sarah’s duet with Howie Dorough, is very Backstreet Boy-ish (of course!). It’s a fun ditty to sing along with. Only, it reminds me of N’Sync’s “Tearing Up My Heart.” I don’t know, but the song just automatically plays in my head when I heard this first track. Sarah and Howie’s voice blends just perfectly. Expect yourself to have the last song syndrome after listening to this.

Sarah’s sugar-coated rendition of “Just Me” reveals the Pop Star’s playful, flirty side; it actually felt like listening to Madonna’s “Fever.” She showcases her soulful voice with the R&B track “Silence” and “Played.” “Movie Love,” on the other hand, adds international vibe to the album.

Of course, there are the cheesy, senti cuts that make for good background in those cry-me-a-river sessions like “Look Inside Ourselves,” “Remind Me to Forget You” and “Sweet Memories.” I imagine the last song playing while chugging a bottle of beer over a break-up.

For those who are suckers for love songs, there’s “What Have You Done to My Heart,” “One Little Kiss,” “You’re the Love of My Life,” “I Am Falling,” “I Belong To You” and “Where Only Angels Fly.”

The songs “Dahil Minahal Mo Ako” is particularly catchy and can be the title of Sarah’s next romantic movie, so is “Kahit Mahal Mo ay Iba.” (Another Sarah-John Lloyd team-up? Why not?)

With the right mix of songs, “Just Me” is a good listening companion, totally worth your every peso.

Titik Pilipino Album Review by Lorelie Dino

Coming from a very talented artist, this album containing 16 tracks is worth every peso you spend on it. Sarah Geronimo delivers a good package with her full voice. Unlike other singers who perform exaggerated calisthenics and overly strain their vocal chords, Sarah is a pleasure to listen to. With this CD, she brings in more flavor from her earlier albums. She is no longer the tweetums girl. She is getting funkier and more sophisticated, evident from her latest tracks.

The only minor thing I found less appealing was the lyrics booklet front cover attire. It seemed like all the outfits were thrown together, just for the sake of wearing it. Perhaps too much layering was done for that look. Overall, the CD was nicely designed. It is simple and projects the album title itself, “Just Me.”

With Christian de Walden behind the making of this album, he brings together Sarah G. with Howie Dorough of worldwide phenomenon, the Backstreet Boys. This gives us a very fine taste from both amazing talents. “I’ll Be There” is a lively, sweet duet. It is an excellent choice as carrier track. The lyrics may be cheesy, but that is what brings out the cuteness factor in the song. It has a catchy beat. This is my fave because it reminds me of a Britney Spears’ song from one of her earlier albums. I am a Britney fan. With this analogy, it leaves no doubt then that Sarah is indeed the Philippines’ Pop Star Princess.

“Dahil Minahal Mo Ako” is the next single. It has an engaging melody and good rhyming. You can hear soothing messages from “Where Only Angels Fly” and “One Little Kiss.” This comes from the well-done instrumentation on the said tracks and cool vocal delivery of Sarah. “You’re The Love Of My Life” and “Sweet Memories” give a glimpse to the maturity in her, both vocally and her growth.

This album offers quite a good number of songs. “Silence,” “Just Me,” “Played,” and “Movie Love” are the funky tunes. There is a wide range of contributing renowned composers. Unlike others who only keep on doing cover songs, this one is innovative. “Just Me” from Sarah Geronimo offers fresh, new tracks to your delight.

JUST ME: SARAH GERONIMO BLOSSOMS INTO MATURITY

WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET, SAYS SARAH. BUT LOOKS LIKE WE GET MORE OF HER IN THIS NEW ALBUM, YVETTE TAN SHARES.

“I’m very happy to finally meet Howie,” Sarah Geronimo says in Tagalog.

She is saying this the day before the shoot of her music video with Howie Dorough of the Backstreet Boys. Howie had just flown in from LA that day, accompanied by his wife Leigh and Christian de Walden, a US-based music producer who has worked with some of the top acts in the US Latino and country charts.

Christian produced Just Me, Sarah’s latest album. He was also instrumental in getting the pop princess and the Backstreet Boy together for the duet “I’ll Be There for You,” a lovely cross-country love song that pushes all the right pop buttons.

It’s just one of the songs that can be found in Just Me, Sarah’s latest album. “It’s called Just Me because what you see is what you get,” Sarah says. But don’t expect the same old Sarah Geronimo ballads — Sarah promises the album to be a different aural experience for her fans. “There’s some rock and Rn’B in it, and of course, pop songs and ballads,” the singer says.

“The song ‘Silence’ is going to be a big break for her,” says Christian de Walden, who also produced  Becoming, Sarah’s 3rd album, “It’s so off the wall as a song. It starts with “Silence! Shhh!”; and this is the real Sarah, the new Sarah.”

He adds, “I expect a lot from (Just Me) because of (Sarah’s) new maturity… she could always sing the big notes but she reaches them so much easier now… That’s why it’s called Just Me, because she is bettering herself all the time.”

Christian was also the force that got Sarah and Howie together. “When Boss Vic del Rosario asked me, ‘Can you get a duet?’ I said, ‘Howie would be a perfect match,’” the producer says, “I sent (Howie’s) manager all the links about Sarah and the next day he said, ‘Yes.’”

For Howie, agreeing to the duet with Sarah was an easy decision, not just because of Sarah’s prowess, but because of her work ethic as well. “Christian de Walden… approached me four months ago to do the song with her and I went on line… (and) saw …who she was… So I just fell in love with the project. I think that she’s a great person, a very very humble person, very talented and hard worker.”

Sarah, of course, is equally impressed by her co-singer’s ethics. “He seems very humble. You can sense it in the way he speaks. He’s very warm,” she says.

“‘I’ll Be There for You,’ is an unconditional love type of song,” Howie explains, “It’s about how two people from a distance are able to love and support each other.”

A new album and a duet with one of the Backstreet Boys aren’t the only feathers in Sarah’s cap this month. The singer is also on the cover of the October issue of Preview Magazine, one of the country’s premiere fashion magazine — a prestigious achievement and proof positive that the baby is now a lady. She is also gearing up for The Next One, her 9th major concert, at the Araneta Coliseum, as well as shooting the sequel to A Very Special Love, her hit romantic movie with everyone’s favorite leading man, John Lloyd Cruz.

Despite all her recent projects and achievements (we’re not even counting her past awards, concerts and starring roles), Sarah has managed to remain grounded in reality. In her mind, her first concern is for her fans, because she would not be where she is without them. Nowhere is this more evident than in her answer to the question about Just Me possibly becoming an overseas hit: “We all know how hard it is to penetrate the international music scene,” Sarah says, “I think I’m going to concentrate here first.”

Christian de Walden, who has produced numerous hits in the US, has no such qualms. When asked the same question about Sarah, he immediately said, “With this album, yes.”

Wow Philippines Commercials

I’ve been surfing the net, going to different travel sites, when I remember those commercials sponsored by the Department of Tourism (Philippines).  So I went to you tube and searched for these vids.   It’s just nice to see beautiful places from your own country, momentarily making you forget the ugly side of living in this country–politics.  The commercials are really, really good!  They were from a few years ago but they could still use it.  The places they featured are breathtaking!
